This site has two purposes: to share with other teacher educators my teaching, scholarship, and service, and to share with other classroom teachers resources for expanding classroom teaching and learning. Click on the tabs above for teacher education, elementary resources, my literacy loaner kit program, examples of community involvement, and to access sample publications. I am an assistant professor in the Department of Early, Childhood, Elementary, Middle Level, Literacy, and Special Education at The University of North Carolina Wilmington. I teach a variety of courses in our department including elementary methods and foundations courses, and I am also in our local schools frequently where I observe our elementary interns in action! Before pursuing my Ph.D., I was an elementary classroom teacher and inclusion teacher for 7 years in NC Public Schools. I earned by Ph.D. in Educational Studies from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and my M.Ed. from Elon University in Special Education. My undergraduate degrees in Elementary Education and English are both from UNC Greensboro and I am an North Carolina native.
My Teaching, Research, and Service in Teacher Education
To me, teaching, research, and service are intimately threaded together. My teaching and research inform one another, and my service is generally an outcome of my teaching and research or an experience that prompts new initiatives in my teaching or research. These three areas are typically associated with elementary teaching methods (specifically social studies and language arts), diversity education, or teaching with film and discussion. I am also interested in teacher vision and understanding the new Common Core Standards in elementary grades.
