"And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." Nelson Mandela
My Background
I am an Associate Professor of Elementary Social Studies in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Level, Literacy, and Special Education at The University of North Carolina Wilmington. I teach a variety of courses in our department including elementary social studies methods, reading methods, and action research. I am also in our local schools frequently where I observe our elementary preservice teachers in action! Before pursuing my Ph.D., I was an elementary classroom teacher and inclusion teacher for 7 years in NC Public Schools. I earned my Ph.D. in Educational Studies from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and my M.Ed. from Elon University in Special Education. My undergraduate degrees in Elementary Education and English are both from UNC Greensboro and I am an North Carolina native. |
My Teaching, Research, and Service
To me, teaching, research, and service are intimately threaded together. My teaching and research inform one another, and my service is generally an outcome of my teaching and research or an experience that prompts new initiatives in my teaching or research. These three areas are typically associated with elementary teaching methods, teaching difficult topics, or teaching with film and discussion. Click here to access my current vita (2.10.2020). |
